We’re sure it’s suitable for straight or slightly curly hair.

But does the Airwrap work just as well on natural hair that is known to be fine and unruly?

What is the Dyson Airwrap?

The Dyson Airwrap is a complete styling tool that simultaneously styles and dries hair.

It comes with different attachments, each of which replaces a separate device.

The Dyson Airwrap is a 4-in-1 device:

  • A hair dryer. It looks like a miniature version of the Dyson Supersonic
  • A smoothing brush. Two different sized tips are provided
  • A round brush. This brush is especially good for blow-drying and adding volume.
  • A curler. Two tips are also provided for curling hair, one of 30 mm and the other of 40 millimeters They allow you to vary the size of curls

The Dyson Airwrap has a special powerful motor. With more than 100,000 revolutions per minute, it is able to generate the “Coanda” effect.

It’s this phenomenon that allows it to attract hair like a magnet and curl it much more easily than a conventional curler.

Small detail that has its importance, the device and its accessories are delivered in a very practical and design storage box.

Dyson Airwrap highlights

Multifunctional

As mentioned earlier, the Airwrap can be seen as a straightening brush for natural hair, but it can also be seen as a complete drying and styling device.

👉🏾 What is the best hair straightener brush for natural black hair ?

First of all, it greatly reduces the time needed to achieve your hairstyle.

Secondly, it allows you to create several types of hairstyles: straight, wavy, wavy, simple blow-dry, everything is possible with one device!

This is for me the most obvious advantage and what differentiates it the most from other appliances on the market.

Protects the hair from heat

The device is equipped with an intelligent control system that measures the temperature of the airflow 40 times per second to keep it below 150°C.

This prevents any damage to the hair while it is in use, whether it is in blow dryer mode or in straightening brush mode.

In addition, the handle does not get hot, which ensures that you do not burn your hands as you may have done with a conventional straightener.

Handling the device

The Dyson Airwrap is pretty easy to handle because it’s light for its size.

This is important when you know how many hours you can spend on your hair, and what your arm muscles go through every day…

The storage box

In addition to being elegant, the storage box of the device is really practical. It allows you to store all the accessories in their respective compartments.

The inner lining is made of very soft fabric and the closure is done via a magnet.

You are sure not to misplace a tip after your beauty session!

Dyson Airwrap weaknesses

Its price

box-dyson-airwrap-hair-kinky

This is undoubtedly its main disadvantage, because you have to spend nearly 500 euros to afford this little gem!

However, this price is justified by the fact that the Dyson Airwrap actually includes 4 hair styling devices on its own: a hair dryer, a straightener, or curler and a round brush.

Less suitable for very short hair

The Coanda effect that makes the strength of the device is unfortunately not very suitable for very short hair, which can not wrap around the tip.

The case does not have a handle

This may seem like a small detail, but for the more adventurous among us, it really matters!

The Dyson Airwrap and natural hair

The Airwrap is a versatile device that allows many hairstyles, but is it suitable for very curly hair or even type 4 hair that is often fine and fragile?

For a classic blow-dry, the round brush of the device does the job as well as other brushes on the market in less than 20 minutes.

What’s more, the Airwrap is less likely to damage hair fibers thanks to its reasonable temperature.

If you want to straighten your hair with the nozzle of the straightening brush, you can also get very good results. However, you will have to spend some time detangling your hair with the round brush.

Tip: After blow-drying, you can use the Coanda effect on the appliance to pull your hair in and use a hand comb to detangle it more effectively.

Afro hair is generally thinner than other types of hair. This does not prevent you from creating beautiful curls with the dedicated nozzle of the device. However, they may not last as long as on other hair types.

To remedy this, a disciplining lotion or hairspray can be a good solution, you will manage to make your curls last 2 to 3 days.

Finally, the Dyson Airwrap’s blow dryer nozzle works well for kinky hair, although it’s not as powerful as the Dyson Supersonic.

How do I use the Dyson Airwrap on natural hair?

1. Apply a heat protectant

As with any heated appliance, it’s important to protect your hair from the heat of the heated brush.

If you have very curly or 4c hair, be sure to choose a protective anti-frizz lotion or cream.

2. Part your hair

Divide your hair into at least 3 zones. If you have long or thick hair, it may be necessary to divide it into 4 to 6 sections so that you can manage smaller strands one by one.

3. Roughly detangle your hair with a hand brush (optional)

You can start removing the bulk of your curls with your regular brush. This allows you to start lightening your hair ahead of the next steps.

4. Straighten your hair with the flat brush

Use the flat brush tip to discipline your hair. Be sure to run it through the roots to remove frizz. At this point, your hair should be much less curly.

5. Add volume with the round brush

Clip on the round brush tip and run it through each strand. This will give your hair some shape.

6. Use the curling attachment

Choose one of the two sizes of curling attachment depending on whether you want tight or voluminous curls. For type 4 hair, curls will hold better with the small tip.

Strand by strand, let the hair wrap around the nozzle, leave for a few seconds, then release.

You can run your fingers through the curls if you find them too tight.

7. Fine-tune roots with a traditional straightener

If you still have stubborn curls at the roots, you can run your traditional straightener through them.

Does Dyson damage hair?

The question is rather why the Dyson Airwrap doesn’t damage hair!

The technologies used by the device make it one of the safest styling tools on the market today.

Whether you’re curling or straightening, its unique airflow allows it to use a lower temperature than most competing straighteners and curlers without losing effectiveness.

Most straighteners on the market use extreme heat up to 240 degrees, which is why some use steam to be less harsh on hair.

The Dyson Airwrap’s temperature is only 150 degrees, so it’s gentle on hair fibers without the use of steam.

The Dyson Airwrap doesn’t damage hair thanks to the low temperature of the Coanda effect. There’s no risk of burning the skin either because the handle stays at a low temperature.

Some technical features

Here are the main features of the Dyson Airwrap:

  • Three temperature settings from 90 to 150°.
  • One setting for cold air ideal for setting hair
  • Three airflow speeds
  • What’s in the box: two curling tips, two straightening brushes, one round brush, one smoothing blow dryer tip, one cleaning brush

My review of the Dyson Airwrap for afro hair

review-dyson-airwrap-4c-hair

As far as drying is concerned, the Dyson Airwrap is very well suited to natural hair, the choice of temperatures makes it easy to adapt to your hair type. Special mention to the possibility of blowing cold air, which helps to fix a style.

As for blow-drying, the device is also suitable for type 4b or even 4c hair. Without working miracles, the round brush does the job as well as a standard round brush.

Straightening can be a little more delicate if you have natural hair. The device comes with two straightening brushes, one of which is better suited to fine hair, which is a good point.

It is possible to achieve a more than decent straightening, however, you will have to put your heart into it, but after all isn’t that always the case when it comes to straightening natural hair?

Finally, the curler tips are suitable for afro hair provided that you have done a proper straightening. The two sizes of curlers are good news for type 4 hair. We prefer the small tip to make tight curls that can hold longer on this type of hair.
